Click Sponsor Me to show your support for the unsung heroes of puppy mills. Every Lab in the photos above are dogs raised in puppy mills. They're beautiful Labs aren't they? You can see why they were chosen as breeding dogs. All but one of the Labs in this photo has found their 'happily ever after' thanks to Lab Rescue of the LRCP. The words 'puppy mill' conjure images of abuse, neglect and fear. Sadly, those images are reality! Lab Rescue of the LRCP longs for the day when we will not need to respond to a Lab in crisis. But, until then, we will continue to play the important role of rescuing the true heroes of puppy mills; the dogs who make it out and go on to live happy and fulfilling lives. Did you know that each year, about 30 of the 1,000 Labs saved by Lab Rescue, are Labs who have been breeder dogs in puppy mills? Did you know that each and every one of those Labs goes on to find their forever family, thanks to Lab Rescue? Too many of these dogs will not be able to join us at the walk and celebrate joyous encounters with the other dogs and people there. Why? Some just can't move beyond the environment in which they were raised. The Hidden Costs Puppy mill Labs come with extra costs and extra demands. A puppy mill dog needs extra time, patience and skills. They generally take much longer to be adopted because of their lack of socialization. Labs from a puppy mill have seldom been seen by a veterinarian. We never know what conditions are going to walk through the door. Most of the dogs are female and have had a litter of puppies every six months until they cannot breed any longer. Their costs are double or triple the average cost of other labs and average $1500 - $2000 per dog. This includes resolving the parasites that they arrive with, vaccinations, repairing torn ligaments, and for the females, complicated spays and the removing of mammary masses. Most come with fleas and ticks and it's more common than not for these dogs to be treated for Heartworms and / or tick borne diseases. Help make sure that we can be there whenever we're needed. Meet Rose Rose is a former puppy mill Lab. She spent her first 6 years having litter after litter. While it sounds odd, we at Lab Rescue, celebrate that some puppy mills retire their dogs into our care rather than destroying the dogs themselves. We celebrate adding Rose to our community of Labs looking for homes because the alternative is tragic. Rose will enjoy the rest of her life with a new forever family and she is just one of 12 that we have already found homes for this year. Three more are arriving shortly. On a cold, snowy day in March, we received word that Rose could come to us. Each time a call like that comes in, we have less than a day to go and get the dog. When Rose first arrived she visited our vet. It was the first time she had ever seen a veterinarian and the first time that she had ever received the basic vaccinations that keep our dogs healthy. Her spay was a complicated one. Then Rose met her foster family. She spent days cowering in the corner, not eating or drinking. The resident dogs, Boris and Natasha, were invaluable to helping Rose make those first brave steps towards life. Lab Rescue is grateful for the patience that Rose's foster dads have, and continue, to show her. She has been with them since April 1st and just today, we got word that she let one of them pet her for the first time and it seemed like she liked it. Just imagine. Her life is just starting. Meet Max - the yellow Lab in the photos above. He is our 400th Lab rescued this year. Please take a moment to welcome Max into the Lab Rescue family. Max arrived at one of our Lab Rescue vets from a farmer in PA. He is 8 years old and is, physically going through a lot. He has a horrible ear infection with multiple bacteria. He has probably been in a lot of pain for a long time for it to be as bad of an ear infection as it is. Our vet has removed a mass from his neck and got good margins; a good thing because it turned out to be low grade malignant. Another mass was removed from his eye lid. His incisors are worn down, he has problems with his toes and had to be treated for whipworm. I think a picture says a thousand words, and three tell a whole story. These photos are of Max. The first is of Max being released from his chains. The second is when Suzanne was able to pet him for the first time and the third is Max, already wearing a smile on his face; his clean, silver face. He looks like a different dog already.
