My personal message

Hi friends and family! As some of you know this past September I had Charlie placed with me as his puppy raiser! Since my co-raiser, Hannah, and I got him we have been working hard to do our best to prepare him for his formal training with the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind. The puppy raisers provide a loving home for these young pups to learn and excel in until they are old enough to return to the foundation. We teach them basic commands like sit, stay, down, stand, etc, how to walk on a loosely held lease, good house manners for their future owner, and many more tasks they will encounter as a seeing eye dog! Terps Raising Pups is the group on campus at the University of Maryland, College Park. This group consists of about 30 dogs and 80 volunteers that help these puppies in many different ways. Each dog has their specific puppy raisers but we also have some students that volunteer as puppy sitters. The puppy sitters are there to watch dogs for raisers that may need additional help or a break to get school work done. Each raiser is extremely hard working and gives a large portion of time to ensure these dogs are set up for success. This event is really important to our program because it helps the foundation raise money to support the puppies and get them ready to be seeing eye dogs. These dogs are placed with their new handlers free of charge to them so they are extremely dependent on personal donations and sponsorships to support their work! The goal for Terps Raising Pups overall is to raise at a minimum $6,000 to sponsor a puppy which allows us to name it and one of our raisers to raise it. We hope that you will support this great cause and donate to our group to continue the great work of the Guide Dog Foundation and America's VetDogs Scott Howarth UMD Puppy Raiser
