CLIMB JOURNAL

COMING HOME

On behalf of the Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation:

Given the unfortunate recent tragedy on Mount Everest and out of respect for the Sherpas that lost their lives, Dr. Shehbaz Butt has decided not to climb Mount Everest this year.  He is safely on his way home from Nepal and will be back here in Markham by the weekend.

We are very appreciative of the generous donations that were made as part of the fundraising efforts. At this time, those funds will be held in an account until Dr Butt is able to confirm plans of his Seven Summits completion.

Thank you everyone for your generous support and we look forward to welcoming Shehbaz home.

PLANS ARE ON HOLD
April 18, 2014 (8:18 a.m.) - Good morning. Dr. Shehbaz Butt says, "hello" to everyone. Other than having a cold, he is doing alright! As you know, he has been on Base Camp and is still currently there. Due to the avalanche, all plans are currently on hold.

Another update will be shared as soon as Dr. Butt gets in touch with family again. Thank you for your support.

We are at 3720m, at one of the highest airports in the world. We are having a tea here on our acclimatization hike. A Mi 17 Russian helicopter just took off when we arrived here to bring supplies to base camp. This is a picture of Joe with the Sir Edmund Hillary monument.

First sighting of Everest!

Our guide is Tenzeeng Sherpa, 28 years old. he attends to all of our needs. he just got married in February of this year so I guess you could say he is on his honeymoon with us and not his bride!

IN KATHMANDU BEFORE THE CLIMB

April 7, 2014 -
We have arrived at Kathmandu and are enjoying our days before the start of our climb. I am climbing with my good friend, Joe Raftis and we have officially picked up our climbing permit (#13) and have met with our guide. Our guide is 28 years old and this is his first attempt on Everest. He has guided one other mountain and had a successful summit — so I think we have the only guide on the mountain with a 100 per cent success rate!
